David Wood moved a step closer to claiming the 2008 KTM 990 Super Duke title with a commanding victory in the opening 10 lap race at Cadwell Park (25 August).
The Art of Racing pilot stole the holeshot into Coppice from pole position with his nemesis, Kelvin Reilly, hot on his heels and David Heal tucked neatly into third. Within the opening 2.18 miles, Wood and Reilly had pulled a two second gap on the chasing pack, with Wood looking in control and comfortable for another 25 points.
A race long battle unfolded for the final podium slot. Edmeades moved onto the bottom step on lap two, immediately coming under pressure from Fast Bikes Magazine journalist Alistar Fagan. The two swapped positions with mirror moves at Park Corner on successive laps, until a slight error by Fagan on lap 8 allowed both Edmeades and Smith through.
Wood paid testament to the strength of his Pirelli Dragon Supercorsa Pro SC2 tyres on lap 7 as he moved 3 seconds clear of Inmoto Corse’s Kelvin Reilly, posting a new lap record of 1:35.464s. Smith muscled his KTM through to claim third on the penultimate lap. David Wood now needs just 8 points in the final race of the day to claim the 2008 crown.
David Wood, Race Winner: Kelvin is riding really well, hes not going to give up without a fight and I can see this going down to wire.
Round 11
David Wood secured his second race win of the day and with it the 2008 Championship at Cadwell Park (25 August).
Wood lined up on pole once again for a reduced 8 lap KTM 990 Super Duke race, needing just 8 points, he made a slower start than usual, allowing Smith and Reilly to take the early lead. However, such was the pace of the 40-year old Art of Racing rider that he was soon pushing for the lead. Gaining maximum drive out of Charlies, Wood catapulted past Reilly, ducking underneath his elbow, to take the lead into Park corner.
From this point in it was all Wood, and he claimed victory across the line by just over a second from Reilly, having smashed his own lap record on the penultimate lap. Fagan claimed third just ahead of Edmeades and Smith.
Wood will now look forward to the final round of the season at Brands Hatch Indy in October as Champion (11-12 October).
David Wood, Race Winner & 2008 Champion: It feels really good to the win the Championship. It’s been a great season and I’ve really enjoyed battling against Kelvin (Reilly) all year. Hopefully we can do it all again next year! I’ve just got to say a big thanks to all the Art of Racing team for a great year.
